Forum went down

My forum went down, I have contacted my server to find out why, have not yet heard back from them.
I'm just wondering what may have triggered it? I went into the news/newsletters tab in admin to send
out a pm to all members, as soon as I pressed enter to send, the forum went down. Any idea what may
have triggered it?

Quite possibly sending out lots of emails (via notifications from the pm's) overloaded the server where your site is hosted and it's crashed in some way ?

How is your site hosted ? A simple restart of the server or a service like apache will probably get it up and running straightaway.  It's really one for your host to sort out to be honest so I would get onto them again.

If they don't respond in a reasonable time then it's time to find another host

Do you get any error messages? The problem is most likely what Storman has suggested though.

Most likely your host automatically disabled your SMF installation when you poured too many emails into the "outbox" at once. Check with them what their current caps are on emails per minute, hour, and day. SMF 1 does not cap its sending (i.e., it dumps everything at once into the outbox), which frequently triggers hosts to shut down SMF. If that's what happened, you'll need to either upgrade to SMF 2 (which has sending caps), or use another product such as PHPlist for mass mailings.

Have you heard back from your host?
Generally, if you can't give us some sort of exact error message - we can only guess, and guesses do no good in trying to figure out the cause.
