Cannot choose an avatar from the gallery??

I have avatars in my avatar directory, but for some reason I cannot select them. I have attached an image so you can see what I see.

Also when I try to go into file Maintenance I get the following:
Cannot access attachments upload path!

attachments are set to 755.

If you go to Admin>Attachments and Avatars>Attachment settings, is the path shown in "Attachments directory" correct?

If you go to Admin>Attachments and Avatars>Avatar Settings, is the path shown in "Avatars directory" and "Avatars URL" correct?

yes both are correct

found issue. it was on my web hosts end.
