New Post Indicators?

I'm currenty using UBB.threads forum software and I like how they have indicators when somebody posts a new topic such as hot topics that have fire and new column colors. I was wondering if SMF has anything like this as a default or would it be possible to add something? I think it helps forums from looking like they are stale and gives them a bit of life.

Here is a screen grab of what I mean. The top colors are recent post and its hard to see but hot topics have a "fire" animate gif.

**** And, are there any good recommended photo hosting sites/mods that work with SMF?

In "Topic Settings" you can define the number of posts for a "hot topic" and "very hot topic" :

Is this what you mean?

Can also be found below the topic list : http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=147.0

i think part of what you are asking is covered in the attached image. for the image hosting part check the mod site there are a few gallery mods.

No I don't think you understand what I mean. Visit the Surfermag forum link and I think you will get the idea. When there are new postings, the rows turn to a different color at the top. Is this possible with SMF?

So you want the rows for New topics/replies to be a different color? I think that's what your screen shot is indicating. The MessageIndex.template.php would likely be the place to have a look. That's the equivalent of your screen shot anyway. You'll see from here how the "new" image gets generated:
// If the board is new, show a strong indicator.
if ($board['new'])
echo '<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/on.gif" alt="', $txt[333], '" title="', $txt[333], '" />';
You could apply something similar to the entire row which is just a line above that.
Always be a little kinder than necessary.

OK so is that PHP I have to edit? in the Ubb.threads forum its just CSS. I'll have to learn PHP it looks like.

Maybe UBB has some built-in feature then? And yes, the display of the rows is certainly CSS, but the logic to apply it is within the PHP file.

MrCrude

It is a built in feature - all you have to do is modify the css.

Also, where can I change this image?

mashby

Using FTP, overwrite that image with a file of the same name and format (GIF). Should do the trick.

Per the highlighted rows, you could ask in this board for one.

Currently, lines don't have one color, topic name, number of replies and times read have the same color, depending on sticky, locked or normal, other cells have a default color.

What is it exact that you want? Do you want to keep all those different colors or don't you care about sticky etc?

Also, I'd like to have a link to your forum.

I want a new "hot topic" to turn a darker color and the next hot topic alternates to a similiar color. If you look at the surfer mag forums, you can see how this works. When the topic dies out after interest, they go back to being a lighter color. The link is posted above. I think this gives more life to a forum.  ;) Its also cool how the subjects go bold too like in the stickies.

I'm not sure if this helps, but here is the CSS from their forums on how this works.

}
.lighttable {
  background: #EAF4F4;
  color: #000000;
}
.darktable {
  background: #D0E8E8;
  color: #000000;
}
.newlighttable {
   background: #418383;
   font-weight: bold;
   color: #FFFFFF;
}
.newdarktable {
   background: #214141;
   font-weight: bold;
   color: #FFFFFF;
