Non-Banned Member getting banned error

So I have a member who can't access the site, they get errors that they are banned. Their profile doesn't show that they were banned. The IP address they've been using is also not banned. I know they access the forum via their phone and pc. I figured perhaps the phone got blocked when I was blocking spammers.

I go to the moderation log, and I see that nobody banned him.

I go to his profile and I can see in his error logs that he did in fact get the "you are banned" message a few times with a specific IP address, but its not banned...

I go to Ban Log, and I can see he's listed in there yesterday at a specific time, but with a different IP address. I look in the ban triggers for that IP address, that one isn't anywhere to be found either. His email address can't be found as banned, and neither is his hostname.

I went into the Error Log, and now I see him listed there with yet another IP address not even close to the other two...and again, its not banned...

I know this happened with him once before and he was caught in a wild card ban (I ONLY do wild cards for the last group of digits usually). But no IPs or Emails or Hostnames come close to his...I'm utterly confused and don't know where else to check.

*EDIT* I looked at the error log, and used the filter to filter out his errors he's gotten them from 5 or more  different IP addresses in the last 24hrs...so it can't be that. Its not his email address either because I don't ban Gmail accounts

Another user has a similar problem see here.

Similar questions, Is he using a proxy server, a mobile or a web obfuscating service?

Thanks checked out that page. Sounds like the same problem...but not really solved in that thread.

He was using his cell phone to access the site when he got the banned messages. I told him to check what his IP address was from his phone and to let me know. He gave me the IP address, which traces back to what appears to be his home IP address, which I thought was odd, but I know nothing about phone IP addresses and services.

I noticed late yesterday he was on the forum posting away using the same IP address he gave me, and the same IP address he earlier that day and the night before got errors from...

I asked him to go to another site which would tell me his hostname so I could double check into that, and he never wrote back.

I'm the one from the other thread.  :)

If his phone has wi-fi and he's at home, it's probably connecting through his wireless router and would have the same IP as his PC. Ask him o connect with his phone when he is away from home, and then re-check his IP.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. He seems to be able to post again and I haven't done anything. None of the IPs he's ever used are banned. So its just bizarre. The ones he was getting errors with he's now posting with...and he never responded when I asked for the hostname from the places he connects at

If he seems to be able to post again, I'd say this is solved :)

Usually if if you hit any ban trigger once, it may not go away before you empty your browser's cache or wait until it expires on the browser - and if a computer is shared, you may end up "banned" by someone else -  and so even an expired or removed ban may still effect for a while.

what are the ban triggers?  i was a member of a SMF forum and encountered frequent errors "you are banned".  I knew I was not banned because i can still log in from my other PC.  so on the problem PC, i closed the windows tab and cleared/deleted the Modzilla Firefox history/cache.  re-opened the link and i can log in again.  this seems to happen this week for me.

No problem.  I don't think the problem is solved unless we know the cause, if it happens again at my forum I will start a new thread.  I just saw a note above and wanted to know what are the "ban triggers".

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

The ban triggers are what the admin sets them to be.

You can ban a user by their IP, Username, E-mail address, Hostname etc. these are called ban triggers.

If you use a banned IP or a hostname, you get banned from the forum - and simply rebooting your router, while it may change your IP, will not lift your ban because it is already in your browser cache.
