need help with phpbb3 conversion to smf 1.xx

long story short.....

was running 2rc3 & site crashed due to bad mod & made mistake of doing backups thru smf acp instead of sql database with host. [lesson learned] so since backups had dropped tables & such couldn't get running right.

was offered help to restore site, phpbb3 was recommended, I knew no better said go ahead.

phpbb3 was installed, all posts & membership, etc was installed into phpbb

I HATE PHPBB3! I can't do simple mod installs, automod screws up every time......I have been a slave on my own site to someone I don't know, who has been refusing to talk to me or give any info, or finish.

site is up and running but not like I want......told him want smf back, said no and refuses to talk to me.

I installed another sql database, installed smf 1.1.13 
installed phpbb3 to smf 1.1.13 convertor
I cannot get the correct "path to phpbb daatabase to do conversion?

he has one folder pointing to another where to phpbb is installed and I cannot find out what the "path" name is to put into the "convert.php step 1" to even get going & see if all our posts, membership, etc will transfer over and work.

can anyone help?

I've never done a conversion before so don't expect too much

What is mean by path to database ? Normaly you don't give a path to a database, just the name of a database and login things.

Are the two forums in different folders and in different databases ? Or both forums in the smae database with different prefix ?

I have been trying recently to do a database backup of the existing phpbb forum & install that into a fresh 2nd install of phpbb [new database] to see if I can do a conversion that way and totally bypass what this idiot did to me.

Hello there.

I belive that there is not such thing like "path to phpbb database", and what you need is "path to phpbb" and path to smf forum.
Can we see a link to your smf forum please?
Are you sure that paths are correct?

I think there is the problem.
Not 100% for sure but I thought all tables, PHPBB and SMF have to be in the same database. That's also the reason you only have to provide the SMF database password because it's the same as the PHPBB password when they are in the same database.

Because the PHPbb tables can't be found you'll have the error message PHPbb-settings couldn't be found.

The paths are the paths to the forum root directory. Those can differ for SMF and PHPbb.

I am going nuts with this, this gentleman who helped me switch to phpbb has our existing forum tied into his home computer or something also, getting info & relays or something......I am being help prisoner & can get NO RESPONSE from him on anything.

I am learning this stuff [forum software/website stuff] and know very little.

all I do know is I desperately want our community area back on smf, and then delete the 2 databases he has access to.
