Hi guys,

i'm very new to SMF and got a problem with installing. I better explain how i installed it so you may find my problem.
-downloaded and extracted SMF 2.0 RC5
-uploaded the files with FileZilla to my webspace
-went on mydomain/smf/install.php

Now im stuck at step 3. It always says Access denied for user ..... @ localhost...
Servername: localhost
Username: my ftp database name, webspace name mysql name (tryed them all)
Password: webspace pw, ftp pw, mysql pw
Database name: try: smf and hxxp:ftp.domain.com [nonactive]
Table prefix: smf_

I really don't know where the probem is. Please help me out. Thanks.

It's likely the username you are using to connect to the database does not have access permission. Check with your host and they should be able to give you the right credentials to connect.

Ok thanks. I tryed many different ways of Usernames and Database names but which one is right ?

As a sidenote...

Filezilla...

Make sure "Transfer type" is set to "binary", NOT "auto".

It's a bug. :(

Illori

only your host can tell you which username is correct, and since smf does not provide hosting we can not help you with this.

Ok i saw it was set to automatic. Should i delete and re-upload the files now ?

IchBin™

Never had a problem with filezilla not treating file types improperly. Right now, I'd say your files aren't the problem. Get through the database issue first, then we'll see if the files are the problem.

Now im stuck at step 3. It always says Access denied for user ..... @ localhost...
Servername: localhost

Password: webspace pw, ftp pw, mysql pw
Database name: try: smf and ftp.domain.com
Table prefix: smf_

Servername: localhost
Username:  MySQL username
Password: MySQL Password
Databasename: Wil be provided by your provider or you have created a database yourself.
Tableprefix: Not that important. Just use SMF_

When using PHPMyAdmin on your domain the databasename will be shown.

I sure have. :P

Rarely use it, now, coz I have Total Commander. :)

Thanks all, the problem was that the Server name entry was wrong. My hoster told me the entry and now it worked. But i needed to delete and reinstall the forum because of a mistake. Now the entrys dont work again :o What can i do now ?

IchBin™

What entries? The database entries? If they don't work, your ONLY option is to ask your host. They provide this info, there is nothing we can do.

I dont know which entry is wrong. But now it dont works again. I just deleted the /smf path with all the files from my webspace a reuploaded them. Then i went again on /forum/install.php and now it says Access denied. I did everything same like last time.

coldfighter

Now it works again. I dont know why, i just tryed again with the same entries as before.
But now a new problem came up. You better look hxxp:www.sfcgaming.com/forum [nonactive]
I did everything same as last time. Except this time the path is named /website/forum and not /smf as before.

Thanks allot. At last i would like to know if there is an easy backup function or do i have to copy the files from webspace via FileZilla ?

CapadY

Copy the files using FTP
Export your database using PHPMyAdmin. Normaly provided at the admin panel of your provider.

So, you have to make 2 backups, one of the files, one of the database which contents the messages, boards and the other stuff.
