Holy ----, is that it? Gawd, IE is so  stupid!

Yep, that's it. Blew me away too. We tried messing around with cols and all sorts of stuff that people had suggested all over the place. Turns out that the only thing that gives a solid result is not setting the width attribute in %. Fortunately I found that out just barely in time to get it into 2.0 Final (oh and thanks to Arnator and Krash for pushing the bug report).

Now I've had a talk with Norv, and we are not backporting this textarea fix to the 1.1.x branch at this stage. However, since it is so easy to do, I will write a mod that sorts all the default 1.1.x textareas.

Given how close 2.0 actually is, I'd argue that backporting the fix (which is complex because of the very different natures of 1.1 and 2.0) is counterproductive.
So long as 1.1.13 is the only active and supported gold level release of SMF, its developers owe the user community not only security patches, but also all manner of bug fixes. Whether it's right to spend time on fixing M$'s screwups is debatable, but there are plenty of other problems that need to be addressed (building in the eval disable mod, and fixing the Settings.php corruption problem, to name just two critical bugs).

Once SMF 2.0 is 24 karat gold (Real Soon Now, they keep saying), SMF can move 1.1.x to end-of-life and issue only bona fide security patches. Until then, bug fixes should be issued on a regular basis. Period, end of story.

Quotebuilding in the eval disable mod

It's built in to 2.0 already.

Quoteand fixing the Settings.php corruption problem

I thought that been solved in 2.0 already too.

Only because 2.0's dev is so far behind what was originally planned, IIRC it was planned for a gold release 4 or so years ago, wherein it would have been quite acceptable to not provide anything other than security fixes.

Just noting that I've written the mod package but don't have time to test it this morning. Will give it a run tonight. I had to update browser detection to include IE8 anyway, so I included all the detection from 2.0. Also added a minor fix to the quick edit feature, as per this post.

Ok, tested the thing and it all works. http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3060

Installs and uninstalls cleanly. Functions as it should. No jumpy cursor when using IE8 with 1.1.x. Compatibility mode is not required. Browser detection seems fine. Quick edit works perfectly for non-staff accounts.

Since it's my own mod I didn't get cheeky and approve it myself. Would suggest that people wait until the Customise team checks it over, just to be sure, but if anyone seriously needs it in a hurry I can give them a copy.

Ok Phil, I wrote another package to do your 1.1.x Settings.php protection too. Just for the hell of it.

O:)  :D

But, built into SMF 1.1.14 would be so much better...

Yes, if it weren't now in maintenance only release...
