Hello,

We are currently using 1.1.11.  In hitting to do the automatic error check and update i get the following error.  A big red box comes up and says, "Error in Package Installation".  Out of the 11 line items that it checks the test failed in the "./Sources/Subs-Package.php".

Under my "Installed Packages" i have this progression.  We haven't had an error in the upgrade process before now.  Mod Name    Version
1.    SMF 1.0.11 / 1.1.3 Update    1.1    [ Uninstall ]
2.    SMF 1.0.12 / 1.1.4 / 2.0 b1.1 Update    1.0    [ Uninstall ]
3.    SMF 1.0.13 / 1.1.5 / 2.0 b3.1 Update    1.0    [ Uninstall ]
4.    SMF 1.0.14 / 1.1.6 Update    1.0    [ Uninstall ]
5.    SMF 1.0.15 / 1.1.7 Update    1.0    [ Uninstall ]
6.    SMF 1.0.16 / 1.1.8 Update    1.0    [ Uninstall ]
7.    SMF 1.0.17 / 1.1.9 / 2.0 RC1 Update    1.0    [ Uninstall ]
8.    SMF 1.0.18 / 1.1.10 / 2.0 RC1-2 Update    1.1    [ Uninstall ]
9.    SMF 1.0.19 / 1.1.11 Update    1.0

Is there another place to look for possible installed mods or a place to view more information about this specific error.

Thank you for your help.

I believe i found the subs file.  (C:\SMF\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\Sources)

In looking at other threads though, i was completely lost on the phpinfo | ftp thing that was often requested.

Some questions regarding that:
1.  Does the phpinfo file that you create have to be on the actual server or can this be done remotely?  Or does it even matter.
2.  Where does the file need to be placed?
3.  How do you FTP it to the server?  We do not use this.  We have rarely had to move thing to the server and if we do we just use Logmein.

Thanks,

mcb

I apologize for all the questions, but i am trying my best to learn and understand this problem.  I am reading through the File Edits for 1.1.11 to 1.1.12.

I am looking at the three entries for ./Sources/Subs-Package.php.  Would these be the culprit?  If so, what is the best way to view and edit the Subs-package.php file?  I made a copy of it to my desktop when i uploaded it previous.  But when i open it in note pad the line sequence and delineation is a jumbled mess.  I am able to find the line items that need to be changed, but how it is currently oriented i am afraid that my edit might not be in the right syntax in terms of spaces or carriage returns.

Thanks again for your help.

You're on the right path for sure. I would recommend using a better editor than Notepad, something along the lines of Notepad++. That has some nice built-in visual elements for editing files like PHP and seeing line numbers and such.

It's certainly odd that the only Packages you have are updates so I'm not entirely sure why the errors are occurring, but you could try this. Install the 1.1.12 update and keep in mind that the edits to Sources/Subs-Package.php may not all get completed. Run it anyway. Then after the update is complete, download the Sources/Subs-Package.php file. Use this link as a reference to the edits made to that file. Inspect the file and see what failed. Make the edits the above links mentioned if they aren't made already. Save and upload that file to your server. If you don't feel comfortable doing this part, you can attach that file to a reply here.

Next, you'll likely see a message indicating you should update to 1.1.13. Try to install that, too. Let us know if anything shows up as an error there, too.
Always be a little kinder than necessary.

Thank you for the info.  I did come across Notepad++ and it works much better.  What are the usual consequences for proceeding with an update in a scenario like this?  Is there much chance that the forum would become inoperable?  We are in a crucial time for our forum with some product releases, so i am very leery of bricking it.  And as much as the forum suite is a black box to me the idea of a restore or rebuild is pretty scary.

But we have been experiencing a BIG increase in spam accounts being registered so i would like to do something.

Currently i use Java SMF Backup for our forum backups.  What would be the best steps to back up the complete forum before proceeding with this?

Thanks,

mcb

I went ahead and bit the bullet and ran the update in spite of the error.  I seemed to have made it to 1.1.12 without breaking anything.  I then went ahead and took it all the way up to 1.1.14.  From 1.1.12 to 1.1.13 to 1.1.14 there were no errors listed at all in the pre-check.  We are still getting quite a bit of spam accounts created, but it has slowed somewhat.

Thanks,
