A good spammer blocker mod?

DearSweetAru

So, I have looked through various mods to block spammers, bots, etc. but I guess I'm not finding one that helps all too much.

I'd like to get some suggestions from members on which mod I should really be looking at :) which would be greatly helpful! I currently have the 1.1.13 forum.

So, ja, help please?

Dzonny

Hello there.

There is mods under Spam Prevention section on the mods page that should help you.

Im using "Are you human bot" on 1.1.x versions and it works great, but dont know if that can help you, because my forums isnt on english.

Regards.

All "spam blocker" features and mods are oriented towards confusing or trapping automated signups by 'bots. They rarely can stop farms of Third World humans employed to do nothing up sign up on forums and turn over the IDs to the spambots, which then post spam.

If your forum is only of "local" interest (geographically or a narrow cross section of society such as your college class), and you don't mind blocking potentially interesting members who aren't familiar with your town or alma mater, you can add specific questions to the signup process. That's probably about the best you can do, since SMF's idea of spam protection is the "hard shell" defense, which is useless once a spammer has gotten past the registration. Maybe some day there will be code to scan posts for spam-like traits, and route them to the administrator for a human look-see before the post is displayed.

Don't forget to require email verification of new signups, ban signatures for low post counts, and to consider restricting newbies to one or two boards until they have enough posts and have been around long enough to prove themselves benign, to be let out to play in your full forum.

I'll look at more spam protection mods. I think I was just searching with the wrong keywords, maybe.

Well, there are local people on my forum, but I wouldn't even say that's most of the members, actually. So, doing something pertaining to local would be a bit unfair, though, of course, you have no reason to have known it's not a simple local forum. Asking some sort of question might be helpful, but it'd have to pertain to the vast majority of people and, even so, as you pointed out, there are people hired to simply get in for the spam bot.

I think I will try the no signature, or something along those lines, until a certain amount of posts though, since it'll prevent them from advertising there.

I do have email verification of new sign ups and I have it set that an admin must approve of the member, but I still get a ridiculous amount of spam bots signing up which are just annoying me. They can't post anywhere and I delete them immediately, but it's a bit disheartening to go "Oh! New members! Oh... wait... just more bots... ugh."

I'm just hoping to find a mod that may lessen this.
