Can NEVER install mods, no matter what

On every version of SMF i have ever installed, i can never install mods.

I had just installed SMF 2.0 RC5, i go through the installation process and use the default theme.

I go to admin > packages > upload. Install.

This error appears:

every single mod i install this happens, its like no mods even work. whats going on?

Hello there.

That is error which says that there is some errors in installation, and in your case that is probably coused by too many mods installed.
Can you please give us list of your installed mos?
Can you also post where error is during installation, in which file (that is colored red during installation)?

Sorry, what do you mean by Emulate Version. Ia m running SMF 2.0 RC5 if thats what you mean.

I do not have any other mods installed. I am currently on the default smf theme. I just recently install SMF.

What kind of host system is SMF installed on? Also, curious why you would install RC5 when SMF 2.0 Final is out? Almost every mod for RC5 I have seen will work in Final.

No mod had worked for me on SMF 2.0. So i decided to move to RC5, and none work on this either :/

From your screen shot your permissions are not correct. It may depend on your host but on mine all folders need to be 0755 and all files 0644.

Try this option m8

Make sure you put your forum in maintenance mode.

Right click on httpdocs -  change the permission to 777 and make sure the Recurse into subdirectories is ticked and the Apply to all files and directories is ticked and click ok.

This will set every single file to 777 then try to install a mod.

If this works install all the mods you want then soon as all your mods are installed just go through each folder setting the folders back to 755 then go inside each folder and set each file to 644.

Yes it will take some time but this is the only way round it for me so it might work for you also.

If you go to admin - configuration - server settings thats where you will see how to put your forum into maintenance mode.

Though before you can do this you need to set the Settings.php & Settings.bak.php permissions to 777.

Once you've done this then set all the files and folders to 777.

As a test, I downloaded it to my SMF 2.0 Final site, set the package manager to emulate RC5, and clicked the install button with this result.

No, I don't put the forum into Maintenance mode to install mods....

Download the large upgrade for SMF 2.0 Final...

Copy all files to your web servers folder where SMF is installed. Run upgrade.php from your SMF folder...

Go into your admin panel and delete the mod you are having problems with...

Go to the SMF mod site and re-download the zip file for that mod to your computer...

Go back to the SMF package manager and click "Download Packages". Scroll to the bottom and click the browse button, find the mod you downloaded earlier, select it and upload it. Do not click the install button yet. Go back to the download manager, scroll to the bottom. On the bottom right side click the "Advanced" link. In the text box type SMF 2.0 RC5 and click "Apply". Then click on the "Install Mod" link and see if it will work.

How about files and folders inside those folders on the permissions page? For example, click the Sources folder and it will show file permissions for all folders and files within the Sources folder

It's worth a shot at this point. Just don't leave them at that once you take your site live.

You should be able to set your file permissions to the "Standard" settings as shown here, fill in your admin FTP credentials and set all the files up in one shot.

Hmm. Now i seem to get a message of "You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!".

All files in te Packages directory are 777. :/

Is there a folder in your packages directory named "temp"? If not create it and make it writable.

There ya go. I told you it was a permissions problem. 

Here is a handy little script to change your folder and file permissions very quickly. Copy and paste into a new file, change the value for $dirModes and $fileModes to value you want in line 3 and on line 12 enter the path you want it to perform the changes in. Save as "change_permissions.php". As it is, it will do all files and folders plus recurse through subfolders in the current directory where you place this file. Then just run the "change_permissions.php" from your web browser.

It may or may not work with other themes. When you install a theme, if it needs to make changes to other theme files it will test and see if it can or not. If all tests are successful just click the checkbox for that theme and it will apply to that theme.

You can do that but you don't want to try installing it if it shows errors. Usually if it doesn't show errors it will work okay. User beware though.

There a lot of great mods. If you want a combo chat/shoutbox checkout the AJAX Chat mod.

Hello,

The simplest mod packages that don't require the change of themes are installed OK.

However when I try yo install the packages (or languages) that require the change of themes, I get the notification (in Russian):

"Necessary FTP information

Some files which the package manager should change, don't have the rights to be writable. Change these rights using FTP

FTP server ..."

However I don't have FTP access to my forum, only the protected connection.
I've checked and changed all the access rights.

What can I do?
