Upgrade issue?

I have installed the large upgrade via ftp and when I go to the upgrade.php it says

Updating Your SMF Install!
The cache directory could not be found.

Please make sure you have a directory called "cache" in your forum directory before continuing.

But I have checked with two different ftp programs and the cache file is there. It wont let me proceed any further?

Is the cache folder readable by the upgrader? Is it chmodded properly?

I believe its set at 777. That should be correct?

I have tried 755 and 775 with the same results. No change. I have also deleted and reuploaded the cache file with no change.

I have reuploaded the large upgrade package and still get the same issue. My forum homepage is now a blank white screen but when I go to a forum topic it comes up and says 2.0 at the bottom. So the good news is that I have not lossed anything at this point. I just need help getting the upgrader to complete.
