e-mail verification issue

I have recently started using SMF 2.0 RC5 and I have now upgraded to 2.0 but in both versions the default settings for e-mail doesn't work and I get a error message in my admin panel that stats the e-mail could not be sent using SMTP and smtp_port (message below)

mail() [<a href='function.mail'>function.mail</a>]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set()

Can anyone tell me if they can help with this, is it a server setting issue or do I need to make additional setup as I'm not sure.

does your host provide smtp?
