Attachments folder - tmp files

Whilst doing a backup I noticed that I have a number of files (relating to avatars) in my attachments folder with a "tmp" extension.

Presumably these are created when large images are reduced.

Does anyone know if it's safe to delete these "tmp" files as generally they are quite large in size ?
