moderate logins

I'm using SMF 1.1.14. We've started being hit by lots of spammers.  To resolve the issue I've decided I need to moderate logins.

What i'd like to do is:

1. set the forum so new members must be approved done

2. Send an automated email (we've written) to each new member telling them they need to write back and tell us why they want to be a member.

3. Approve them if we like what they write; otherwise delete the unapproved membership.

As above, #1 is easy, and I've already done it.  The problem is I'm getting a hundred or more requests a day, so I really need to automate #2 and then only log in to approve if they write back something acceptable.

Are there any addons or plugins which will help me do this?  Either for 1.1.x or 2.x?

Any other ideas?

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516 is a pretty good one and is very good at keeping the spammers away. you could also look into the custom form mod, and have it submit to a board that the users can not see, and once approved they get put in a group with more access.
