I added a anti spam mod and I added to verification questions with the visual verification but they sometimes still spam, how can i stop this?

Topman

You cant as far as I am aware.

Just delete their account and BAN the IP and e mail and usernames.
They will get fed up and stop manually registering.

You may also find that if your forum is new then you gets loads for a week or so then it stops or is just a few a month.

Illori

you could also try some of the anti-spam mods on the mod site, there are others that can help as well.

Illori

there are more then just one anti-spam mod, sometimes more then one is needed to control the spammers.

What worked for us:

Manual activation of accounts. Ask them to email you in order to be verified.

Spammers have hired or engineered ways around the captchas and Akismet.

Even with login questions, captchas and Akismet, they were hammering us hard.

I agree -

I just don't have time to keep up with over 100 requests in a couple of days (getting hit about once an hour or two).  To ban the IP addresses would take a heck of a lot more time than it's worth, especially when no one is legitimately using the board anymore.  I made the adjustments to prevent new registration, but I'm still getting mail that says "a new member has registered."

Because of this I just want to lock the whole thing up.  What's a quick way to do that (breadcrumbs please).

Also, is there anyway to prevent people from registering as long as the board is locked, or do I just have to deal with it until I make it disappear.

Thanks!

instrumediatech this topic belongs to someone else and is marked solved, please open a separate topic for your issue so it does not get lost.

instrumediatech

Sorry -

Didn't see that it was locked.

Hmm -

Maybe that means there is no way to lock anything down.   ;)

Illori

i did not say it was locked i said it was solved. they are not the same thing.

instrumediatech

I see - I suppose that's what that green checkmark means.  Not what I'm used to on other forums, but thanks!

Looking at the error log I noticed that some "Guests" could not login as they were banned.
I looked at the ban list and some of the IPs had tried 300 times since being banned/.
Just shows the system works!
