Spam Registrants

I just don't have time to keep up with over 100 requests in a couple of days (getting hit about once an hour or two).  To ban the IP addresses would take a heck of a lot more time than it's worth, especially when no one is legitimately using the board anymore.  I made the adjustments to prevent new registration, and put the forum in Maintenance Mode, but I'm still getting mail that says "a new member has registered."

Is there a quick way to lock it all down (breadcrumbs please), rather than just uninstalling it?

Also, is there a different way to prevent people from registering?
