You will not loose the database. But back it up first, before you upgrade. The only thing you will 'loose' are the custom skins and mods. That is if you upgrade from the 1.1x to 2.0 or from the 2.0 betas and rcs to 2.0.

how do I upgrade from my SMF on my server?  I clicked on the administrator and clicked upgrade to 2.0 but it only brings me to a box that explains 2.0 but does not give me an option to actually perform the upgrade.

You will have to do a manual upgrade. You can read all about that here

I downloaded the file to my computer, and looked into the instructions, but you have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.  How and where do I upload the file to my server. I have control panel but it does not seem to have anyway to upload and extract that I have seen.
