Hello, I am using SMF 1.1.14, and the authentication emails are not being sent out.  After discussion with my hosting company, they have told me that they place restrictions on outbound SMTP, and suggested using PHP mail instead.  However, the PHP setting doesn't work - no email is sent, and the following shows up in the log:
Unable to send mail to the email address '[email protected]'

I know it is not a problem with the php configuration though, because I uploaded a simple test php file to the same path where my SMF forum is located, and when I load it, it sends an email out without a problem:
<?php mail '[email protected]','PHP mail test','Here is the body of the email' ); ?>

Any thoughts on what might be causing the error when SMF tries to send emails, and suggestions for how I might modify the code to fix the problem?

I have been experiencing the exact same problem for a long time now. I am also using SMF 1.1.x but i think the option to bypass this error is not available in the SMF software, although it's a limitation on the server. But i think SMF should be updated to compensate for these limitations set on servers.
The thing that really annoys me is the endless pages of errors of this type in my error log. I have to clear these dozens of pages of errors every morning and night. Very annoying! Maybe someone can suggest a db code to run to clear that "receive email notifications" option from all members, as i suppose that might be causing this error.
BTW, i'm on HostGator and having these same problems, so i suppose you're with them too?
