I am having difficulty with the old database on the SMF and I cannot figure out how to correct it, if I installed the new 2.0 version over the old version, would I loose everything or would it act as an upgrade?

and with upgrade you will lose template changes and modifications,but rest like messages and members will be still there

I backed up my database and tried to use the 2.0 upgrade but it keeps failing, not recognizing the server.  I need to know if I use softaculous to install the new 2.0 will I loose my data from my database or is there a way to import the old data from the old database into the new one?

If you can't run upgrade.php,then you are not able to upgrade your old database and with fresh installation all will be gone including database content,what is the specific error you are getting,when you try to run the upgrade ?
