member group permissions and board permissions

I want member group permissions to be used in my forum and some boards have permissions for guest which I want to remove
Since my forum has many sections I want  member group permissions to be used instead of board permissions


Can any one help me with this

Permissions is a bit of a minefield but basically, they are cumulative. So you start with none for example then give more with each group.

Groups in SMF are designated primarily by post count or group access. I can't recall the exact way it's done in 1.x.x so perhaps someone else could point to an older definition but here's what I do.

If you want members to access different permissions by their post count go to Admin > Members > Permissions and enable "Enable permissions for post count based groups"

Now go to Admin > Members > Membergroups/Edit Membergroups.

You should see the default set of Membergroups of Admin + Moderator + Global Moderator + Main Membership (or whatever the default members group is named) and a separate list of Membergroups for "Post Count Based Groups"

You can modify all of these Post count groups to give or remove permissions.

So if you remove almost all the permissions from Group 1 (0 to 100 posts) then give more permissions to Group 2 (101 to 500 posts) for example, as the members of Group 1 achieve 101 posts, they will gain more permissions.

Alternatively, if you don't want a post count system, then just create new groups based off the default member group and then add or remove permissions you want them to have. They then have to apply to join each group via their profile.

You can then assign permissions to each board/area by allowing only selected membergroups access.
