Error

I'm with siteground, using "Fantastico De Luxe" and it installs SMF V1.1.3, When I fresh install it a new forum it asks me to upgrade to 1.1.4, okay, fine.

I followed the upgrade guide, uploaded "large pack" and extracted it inside the cPanel, and this is the result I been getting.

I've googled, and everything, time to post and see what help I can get.

My Database is small btw.

I get this each time.. before I updated.

The upgrader found some old or outdated language files, for the forum default language, english-utf8.

Please make certain you uploaded the new versions of all the files included in the package, even the theme and language files for the default theme.

I'm having this same problem.  The log file states:

[06-Aug-2011 16:52:40] PHP Fatal error:  Function name must be a string in /home/thewee11/public_html/testing/Sources/Subs.php on line 3756

Illori

biorage please do not create topics just to draw attention to your other topics, that thread has been removed.

shadowskimmer

I am getting the exakt same error.

However, if I comment out row 3756 in \sources\subs.php the update runs.

What impact will this have? How do I solve the problem in a proper way?

please open a separate thread for your issue, this thread belongs to someone else.

But it

please open a separate thread for your issue, this thread belongs to someone else.

But it's exactly the same issue?

Oh well...

Illori

no it may not be the exact same issue as it is not on the exact same server with the exact same configuration.

adbasque

I wanted to say this for a longtime but I decided to give people the benefit of a doubt, everytime someone raises an issue, the so called "specialists" staff of SMF are more eager to tell you to open another thread rather than answering the issue, it is very frustrating, and I have found problem after problem with smf, and please don't give me the usual card "We are volunteers" if people can't do their job properly then don't claim to be a volunteer that is my moto.

You want people to use SMF but no help is provided when needed, instead you waste people's time by suggesting to open another thread.

Yes Servers are not all configured in the same way
Yes different OS are being used various Linux distros and other OSs
But how come we all get the same stupid error then?

I got the exact same error when I used the exact same "Upgrade.php"
It is the same issue, my server stops responding it won't go forward nor restore the previously backed database.
The reason why I used the stupid upgrade because the SMF didn't work as it should be in the first place, suggesting to upgrade my "Database" uploaded the files required and lanuched it and it stopped at 14%

This is what I followed
Quote
For SMF 2.x versions: Extract the following files -

upgrade.php
upgrade_1-0.sql
upgrade_1-1.sql
upgrade_2-0_mysql.sql - only if you use mysql databases.
Upload them to your root folder of your forum. Run http://yourforum.com/upgrade.php in your favorite browser.

If you guys can't help then stop treating people like idiots, it's your product you're here to help if you don't want to help then leave the staff.

Now this is months of configuring my forum and the data uploaded all went in a smoke thanks to your worthless SMF.

I have used MyBB for years and had no problems with it, no serious problems anyway.

I am currently using 2.0.2 and it's not any better than the previous versions, more headaches and frustration.

If you guys can't or won't help don't promote something that doesn't work, and it doesn't work at all most of the manuals and helps are all outdated too.

Good day,
Ex SMF user.

You can ban me if it makes you feel any better or if it gives you any sense of power.

well we have our rules and we are all volunteers, no one here gets paid for what they do.

The reasons for opening a new thread are quite simple.

If even just one other join in, the thread quickly become confusing and the person who made the original post can often not see what's relevant to them, or someone else.

Yes, the symptoms of the problem could be the same, broadly speaking. But, the chances are that the meat of the thing could be totally different and usually is. So, to say that we are "treating people like idiots" on the strength of asking someone to begin a new topic for their problem, where the help will be targetted at them, personally, is, to use a colloquialism, bollox.

Every server is different. Every user is different and every host has different setups. So, yes, it IS a good idea to open a new topic.

You say "please don't give me the usual card "We are volunteers" if people can't do their job properly then don't claim to be a volunteer that is my moto (sic)."

The thing is, we ARE all volunteers. We get NOTHING from doing this, at all. As to whether, or not, we do our jobs properly, that's a matter of opinion. You're welcome to yours, as others (Who praise us for what we do), are welcome to theirs.

If you can't live with that and insist that SMF is "worthless", it's probably just as well that you're, now, "Ex SMF user". WIth an attitude, like yours, I'm sure you'll be sorely missed.

First of all I am not here to have arguments, second I don't have an attitude, I state facts.
Yes I am an ex SMF, because all I got from it is headache after headache, I have used several other packages yes I do agree there are teething problems and issues, no packages is a 100% reliable.

And to be honest I could do without the little sarcasm " WIth an attitude, like yours, I'm sure you'll be sorely missed."
The point is, everytime I come across a problem, I search the SMF community forum for answers very rarely I find an answer, it's full of useless comments, such as this, instead of answering the person and then suggest they start another topic.

Yes you are a volunteer does that mean you sit here and do nothing? What sort of voluntarism, yes you are not getting paid, and?
Why are you here then saying you're a Specialist if you're not willing to help or solve issues?

I am for your information in the same field, I am a programmer, but the attitude of the way you answer people, if you told the guy to start another thread.

The issue is 90% to do with permissions, it's usually to do with the /tmp folder not properly chmoded.
Anyone here who has the same error or problem check your /tmp folder chances are it's not writable.
Chown it to root.root and chmod it to 1777 it should solve the problem if it doesn't then check which file that has incorrect permissions.

Yes I agree different users, different operating (servers), different packages, different configurations, but some errors stem from the same sources more or less.

I think you guys need to change this attitude and be down to earth to think you're special because you're volunteers, a volunteer doesn't need to repeat it every time is asked why is s/he not helping.

Anyway, I wish you good luck, I will leave SMF with my attitude

Good day.

kat

As I said, you're welcome to your opinions and I respect them.

However, as I also said, I believe that you're wrong.

In all honesty, I wish you well with all your future endeavours. :)
