would love to see this get updated for 2.0 sooner than later please. If you don't have time than possibly tell me where to make the changes.
Kind of a shame this isn't part of the core functionality.

You mean this one?

If so, I'm pretty sure this can be installed on a SMF 2.0 installation using version emulate or by manual install following the mod's parser:

You can also ask for support in the mod's support topic:

mod's author don't have time. No sense in posting in there. (no disrespect just been two months since the release) I looked into it but I'm still learning php and didn't get far in making it work.
Still practicing though. I was able to get smf2.0 to recognize but it won't go further. Prior to that, it wouldn't even load.

To follow the instructions from the parser dos not require php knowledge, there are just simply commands like find this and replaced with this.

also, take a look at this:

Manual Installation of Mods

If the mod author is busy you can still get help from other users who are using the same mod.

yea I tried that could not locate the query strings needed to change. If I could get that to work I'd gladly update it so the author wouldn't need to bother.
I'll keep looking at it. but if it was that easy I'm sure it would of been updated by now right?

I just tested this on a SMF 2.0 usinf emulation.

all the edits on sources files are ok.

the problem is with the template files,  the edits on BoardIndex.template.php can be discarded.

the edits on Index.template.php and Login.template.php are failing because of  simple html changes, the mod is looking for:

<form class="windowbg"

and in 2.0 the class="windowbg"  was removed so you have only  <form id="guest_form"

as you can see, this is the only thing why it does fail on install, you can easily do the manual edits.
