VBulletin 3.7 converter - scrambled conversion?

I'm trying to convert an existing VBulletin board to SMF 2.0 but I'm seeing some really weird stuff after the conversion finishes.

Everything appears to have been converted (posts, users, etc), but when we try to start a new thread it gets turned into a reply to another existing post. (????)

If we delete the reply, it deletes the entire thread that it got "tacked" onto.

We've also reinstalled the entire board and re-imported (converted) it several times but the problem is consistent.

We've done maintenance and recounted all the posts, stats, etc, but that didn't help. Recounting the statistics works, but the "Find and repair any errors" function crashes with an internal server error after it gets about 50% ot the way through.

Is it possible that the converter might be mixing something up and cross-linking post somehow?? We can't understand how a new thread manages to get turned into a reply to another post unless something in the database is seriously scrambled. (??)

Here's our environment:
- Plain vanilla SMF 2.0 install, no mods
- VBulletin forum version 3.8.5 (currently working fine)
- Using the vBulletin 3.7 to SMF Converter
- php 5 and mysql 5

Just a note for anyone experiencing the same thing or who may be planning to do a large or busy VB conversion...

After a bit of experimenting, it's possible that new posts or threads being made in the VB forum while the VB to SMF conversion is taking place may be the cause of this effect.

We managed to get what appears to be a properly working conversion done, and the main difference was that we shut down the VB forum before starting the conversion process, preventing any new threads or posts from being made.
