Member list is not the same

Hi,
We have SMF 1.1.13
We have 655 members, it tells us this on the member list. but at the bottom of the forum it says we have 771 members and in the stats it says we have 771.
Yesterday, we had some national publicity and we expected to get new members but we didn't get any.  We also get notification when a new member joins.
Our membership was set to immediate registration, but is now back to member activation.
There are no members waiting in the activation part.
Is there any way I can see who our latest members are, and do you have any idea what is happening.

The admin can see some members that don't appear on the regular member list.
You can see the admin's member list at: index.php?action=admin;area=viewmembers

(I think this is correct for SMF 1.1.x).  You can sort this list by the member id.  So the largest ID is the most recent to join.
When you look at index.php?action=admin;area=viewmembers;sa=browse;type=activate; you see no members awaiting activation?
