You can go to admin/Maintenance/Forum Maintenance/Database and run the task to optimize tables in your database and that should improve your performance some.

If you are talking visible size or "Width" go to Admin/Current theme and find:

Forum width:
Set the forum width. Examples: 950px, 80%, 1240px.

Make adjustments to suit your needs.

is there away to make the writing smaller for all the forum without going to edit it one by one

Actually all you need to do is edit your theme's index.css however ,  looks like you don't have experience in CSS .
I suggest you that first decide your theme and then show us what you want to reduce, will help you by telling exact code you need to modify.

i have picked smf default. all i want to is make it more compact writing smaller. with css i have learned how to change the thread colours and bits around there but with the writing theres lots i have seen for different things so i am a bit stuck there

Please how can I possibly make the height of the forum here  that is all those BOARD slightly get closer to their horizontal lines. I want the overall forum height shrink.
2. How can I make the board descriptions appear in bold color? Tried the css files but can't locate the exact spot. Thanks
