User evaded partial and full bans - how?

Hi there,

I run a SMF 1.1.14 forum. A user was being troublesome so I banned them for a few days. First I banned with a partial ban, then with a full ban.

However, the user was still able to post throughout. The user's behaviour has now resolved, so no need to ban them at the moment - I know if it came to it I could delete the account etc but that is very drastic.

BUT - at the moment I'm not in control of the SMF forum - How can I work out what happened - any logs or something to look through? I banned by all of the options - IP, hostname, username and email address.

Presumably others have had this problem? The user is not an ultra-hacker type and the forum functionality seems ok.

Is it possible you had the expiration of the ban set as Expired/Disabled?

Nope - it was on (initially) - Ban will expire after 7 days, then for the full ban I made it expires never.

The user seemed pretty pleased with himself that he'd still been able to post...

I would of probably nuked em for that.     I would make a membergroup that restricts all posting rights until you get it figured out, in case you have to ban someone again, and make sure that you set their primary membergroup via their profile to that, and not just add em to the membergroup through the membergroup option.

I'll do that. I need ammo for this guy. He's a pain. Thankyou for suggestion! Shame the ban function seems pretty useless.

Any ideas how they got around it or how I can find out?

how exactly did you ban the user? ip? email? username? if you banned the user by ip address alone they most likely have a dynamic ip address and just got a new one.

I've never had a problem wiith banning anyone so I can't offer an opinion about it.  You said you banned everything but did you check banlist after you saw they were still posting?   I would check their permissions to see if anything weird shows up.  The username ban should of kept that account off the forum.
