Can you specify which top icons are you talking of?

This can be of due to code written in <img> tags in the respective files.

it is coded to use gifs, you would have to find where in the code it is calling gif files and change it which may or may not be easy.

Gif files, generally, are smaller in filesize than PNGs.

Plus, you have the advantage of replacing them with animated gifs, if you want to.

Maybe that's why we use gifs, ay?

Maybe next reads SMF forum would have the choice of GIF or PNG, GIF, it's now a very practical and very nice size as it wants to make a small graphics
