Member Specific Permissions

I have SMF 2.0
I dont understand the concept of upgrading or updating my forum.
I see a list of your version and current version.
Not all the files say 2.0.1 are newer, only a few of them are.

What is RC and why are there so many of them ?
Does this forum update itself ?

I am trying to create a member group that can basically see only one or two boards, but my test user can see everything, no matter what all I have tried thus far.

"RC" stands for "Release Candidate", which is, really, the same as "Beta version". i.e. it's not finished.

When a forum gets updated, not every file is changed. In smaller updates, very few are. Hence, the different file versions.

With the membergroup thing, you're experiencing the joys of post-count membergroups.

On my forum, I removed all of those, coz they're a pain in the bum.

You see, if you put a member in a membergroup that you've created, which is NOT based on post-counts, they'll also be in a group which IS post-count based.

So, they could be getting their permissions from the post-count group that they're in, if that makes any sense...?

even my regular users can see the baord I specifically set to only bevisable to the new member group.

Why is this so difficult to comprehend ? Where do I sign up for classes... or get a walkthrough ?

CAPTCHA goes after ten posts.

The membergroup that you have for new members. If it's post-count based, ALL of your members will have the number of posts needed to view the board.

What you could do, is create a new membergroup that is NOT post-count based.

Then, you could use this mod:

to assign all new members to that group.

I have 2.0

I cant for the life of me figure out these permissions.

I have tried everything, and nothing keeps Ted from seeing the entire forum.

Private (Membership must be assigned)
Protected (Only administrators can manage and assign)
Requestable (User may request membership)
Free (User may leave and join group at will)
Post Based (Membership based on post count


none of these make any difference. its as if they are broken. if I had more time, I would liek to figure out why they are designed like that , but I dont have the time.

I went into maintenance and made a backup for database.

a normal user can not verify your permissions to help with your issue, K@ needs an admin level account if you want further help.

I deleted all the post count related gouprs and it seemed to di the trick..

I might call this one resolved for now.

Seems like more Mods are available for the RC versions then for the 2.0
Also, should I be updating to 2.0.1 ?

you should upgrade to 2.0.1 as it contains several security fixes.

today I logged in as Ted, a unique member group, and he can se the entire board again.

The only post count group I couldnt delete, was newbie.
I am looking more into it now...

No this is not fixed..

did you change permissions which boards the regular members group can see? sounds like that is the issue.

thing I saw was when I delete baords from the Newbie post count group, my regular members were affected..

at this point, I dont know what the developers are thinking when it comes to permissions..
I will need a 6 week course to catch up.

then you dont have the option set in your profile to save them by default. i did reply to you here and i am waiting for a reply. also your forum is upgraded to 2.0.1 via the package manager.

When you log in to daforum, please open a chat dialog with the Admin person.

a new group was created along with some permission tweaks, all should be good now. with that one group missing it made setting things up more complicated. for now going to mark this solved as it should be now.

I am greatful for your guidence, and advice on what all I am trying to do, I recommend this SMF to anybody, I been using it on and off for years, nice to see some of the changes 2.0.1 has to offer. If it werent for your help I may have had to suffer my own fate or try another forum software. I am glad I gave you the chance to make me a believer again..
