Creating a transparent background....

Can someone suggest free software or a free website which can edit pics so they have transparent backgrounds?

have you tried gimp?

GIMP would be best. Those are called "renders" and have to be done manually. Always start with the largest image possible and scale it after rendering. You'll get a much better result that way.
