permissions problems

ooooo boy... trying to get the mambo bridge working (ie show the correct forum link in the mambo sidebar main menu module), and *somehow* the Edit Server Settings in SMF page went read-only all by itself.

In other words, I had made a change (incorrectly, it turned out) it gave me a "Hey, finish changing your password" error, which I was NOT doing, and now it keeps coming up saying it is read-only and I can't change anything.

YES I chmod-ed.  Same message. Yes I RTFM, followed step-by-step.

Any ideas or is it possessed?

Nevermind - I unintalled the bridge package and it magically works again.
