is it possible the group on registration in SMF 2.0

in smf 1.X. there was a mod that let members of your forum pick a membergroup when they register to the forum.
That mod was this.
but it is not proper for smf 2.X.
a big discussion occured about it, but it is not solved.
Creator of this mod had said that,

Oh and yes that is right. I misspoke in my previous post suggesting that this mod would not be available for 2.0. What I really meant to say was that functionality of allowing members to change their group in their profiles wouldn't be as needed because in SMF 2.0 there is joinable and requestable groups.

But in smf 2.0, members can not assign their own groups during the registration, after it it can be possible.

Well, the users can register and then go to their profile options and select a free join-able group.
