As it says in the question, when you download a SMF install/upgrade/update package which file extension do you use?  Choose the one you use the most often.

Thanks.

I voted for tar.bz2 though I'd also download tar.gz. I plan to stay away from zip because recently I've been noticing problems with zip archives.

What problems have you been seeing with the zips?

I've noticed that they will say that they are corrupt when in reality they are not corrupt.

I generally use the bz2 archive since it works well across all my machines. It's also usually a bit smaller.

tar.gz, because.... I dunno, I just started making archives in that format a long time ago, and thus like to download in that format also. Although if SMF were to put up a 7zip archive, I'd probably download that.

Generally ZIP but sometimes tar.gz or tar.bz2.
I can extract ZIPs without any problem on my Mac, tar.gz sometimes gives me problems.

tar.gz, as 99/100 times zip mods don't work in the package manager on my localhost SMF installation.

-sigh- I really wish the people reading this would actually look at what's being asked.

The zip/tar.gz/tar.bz2 packages are not mod packages, they're not ones that are going to be used in the package manager. They're the SMF install/upgrade/update packages!

Zip is clearly winner here. I am always using tar.gz when I am on linux machines else if on windows , automatically I things goes into favour of zip... ;) And for logical reason as you will need special utility to uncompress tar.gz / tar.bz2 file while zip can be done natively in windows.

That's because it's made with Linux. I also have this problem with my iMac.

Who said that I was talking about mod packages? I just said I download tar.gz packages in most cases because the package manager didn't work all the time with zip packages. Really, there is no reason to be angry, even if I was talking about mod packages.

Which can also refer to the mod packages, as SMF takes all of these.

"SMF packages" can refer to both instances anyway.

This cannot be about anything other than the packages for install/update/upgrade because SMF doesn't support bz2. Which means basing this decision on anything other than 'what do I use for install/update/upgrade' makes it irrelevant!

It could as well be a typo in the first post.

But who cares about the type? If you want to post what you download most for mod packages, go ahead. There's no wall between this topic and such a post. In fact, you can post both as

I am sorry for not knowing everything. I thought it wasn't wrong to make mistakes, but I guess I was wrong. Sad though. It looks like you can't post a reply in a topic without being criticized about mistakes..

Not when it's a poll of three options.

QuoteBut who cares about the type?

When you have to build multiple packages, if one of them isn't being used, why bother making it? Why not clean up and only serve what's needed to be served?

I'm sorry that you're misunderstanding my harshness, and for being harsh. I thought it was important to actually point out the purpose of this poll so that people voting actually understand what they're voting for and why it might be important.

Especially since when I'm pushing an install on to my webserver, I always use bz2 there because it saves SMF bandwidth when downloading, but I use .tar.gz when deploying to local webserver (regardless of platform) because tar.gz opens on everything I have, while tar.bz2 takes more effort (but still it saves sm.org bandwidth)

Oh, really. People make mistakes all the time, plus I said "as well" which is something different than "it is"

What does this have to do with what I said? That's a whole different subject!

Who cares about what type they vote on? You can vote for both types, there's nothing to stop you from doing that.

Really, don't make such a hassle out of something tiny...

Anyway, tar.gz is good too, but I prefer ZIP, as I said. I just don't know how to compress it on my Mac :P

Thanks for all the feedback all.  I did mean the install/upgrade/update packages and have edited the first post to clarify that.

As for why I'm asking:  I'm looking at redoing the download page.  One thing I noticed is that we present a lot of choices to the users instead of just making it simple with the option of being complex.  Before I made a decision on it (one way or the other) I wanted to get some data.

At this time I don't know of any plans to add or remove any archive types.

Thantos

Friendly little bump.  Thanks for all those that have voted.
