Can I use my existing user DB?

I have a site that already requires a login and profile creation.  Are there any docs that show how to integrate an existing DB for registration/login? I want to keep it as simple as possible for my users by allowing them to post after they've registered via my site.

I can populate the smf_members table but whats the easiest way not to require a login? Is there a session variable I can set with my current user login?
