Require email verification before registration

I'm finding a lot of people are fat-fingering their email address when registering.  But I think there is a better way.

I'd like to require email verification in order to register.  The simplest would be to add an email verification step and send the true registration page URL within the email.

Or even some time of 'invitation' model would work. Since the user can send themselves an invitation.

Does this sound like a good solution?

If I remember right, you have to type the e-mail address twice, when registering. That should stop fat-fingering, shouldn't it?

As you can also set registration to "E-Mail activation", I can't see a problem.

no by default you dont need to type the email 2 times, a mod would allow that though.
