I heard this was a great forum building software, but I can't even begin to figure out how to customize the layout or the configuration of the site. It doesn't work anything like Wordpress or Drupal... I also read the parts in the manual for the admin and it just shows how to add or subtract features. I'm totally lost here.

Welcome to SMF.

Before we start which version are you looking at? 1.1.16 or 2.0.2?

Once you get the hang of things it does get easier.

Hi, welcome to SMF.

Changing from Drupal or Wrodpress to SMF can be difficult, because every script follows different directions, this doesn't mean any script is better or worse, it means they are different.

On SMF we have a wiki: http://wiki.simplemachines.org/ where you can find common solutions for common issues, however, if you want more in detail explanations, feel free to post on the correct boards here.

Basically, the more you check your admin panel, the more you will start to feel comfortable editing parts.

I am using the version that GoDaddy has available to us domain owners there. I think it says "Simple Machines Forum 2.0.2"

My main goal is to be able to first load a theme. I've found one here I like and want to use. Then I would like to change the style of the layout a little bit, change all the colors, set up the forum, groups, etc and then be able to begin entering my content.

Thanks in advance for any help you give.

Let us know which theme you choose.

I would also look into getting a portal that will give you more of the wordpress/drupal feel and allow to create different content blocks.
Community Suite for SMF - Grow your forum with SMF, Gallery,Store,Classifieds,Downloads, more!

SMFHacks.com - Paid Modifications for SMF

Mods:
EzPortal - Portal System for SMF
SMF Gallery Pro
SMF Store SMF Classifieds Ad Seller Pro

I liked the theme called: premiumMGC - I downloaded the zipped folder and under the "themes" section in my virtual server where SMF is loaded I added it to its own folder called "premiummgc"

Thanks VBGamer I will look into these as I definitely cannot write code whatsoever. I'm at hxxp:www.lynda.com [nonactive] right now learning basic phpBB and html / Xhtml
