Unable to find member

Can't send or reply to PM messages to any member on the forum.  I get the following errors after addressing it to "username"

Unable to find member 'username\'.
Unable to find member '\'.

The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
One or more 'to'-recipients could not be found.

Running Mambo v4.5.2 and SMF 1.05.
