It does make life more difficult for spam bots, especially if you have chosen to use randomised Verification Questions.  The catchpa images may not be sufficient as some bots can apparently read them.

Check admin > Configuration > Security and Moderation > Anti Spam.  "Post count under which users must pass verification to make a post"
