phpBB3 to SMF2 with different MySQL usernames

I am having a problem converting because (I believe) the username for the phpBB3 database is not the same as that for the SMF.  Is there a way to deal with that, or am I entirely off-base in my assumption.

For clarification, this is the error I am getting.

Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB3. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the Database account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error that was received from the Database was: SELECT command denied to user '##########'@###.###.###.###' for table 'phpbb_users'

why cannot you do it in one db and then export the smf part into the second db?

The phpBB is in one database and the SMF in another.  None of the databases I use  have the same username or password for security reasons.
