Hi,
I have one forum running smf 1.1.16
To save any mishaps with upgrading i have installed a fresh install of smf 2.0.2 but to a separate Database.
What i would like to do is make a copy of the database from my 1.1.16 forum and transfer it to my 2.0.2 one.
Is this possible and if so how do i go about it. Does it retain all Members and posts ?

My Apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.  :)

You CAN use a v1 database with v2, apparently.

It's bloody hard work, though.

You see, it's not just the software that gets upgraded. The database does, too.

So, the normal route is to backup EVERYTHING, then upgrade from v1 to v2, in-situ.

The two options i have in the forum backup are

Save the table structure.
Save the table data. (the important stuff.)

Which one do i use ?

Neither. That method is AWFUL!!! (It doesn't work, at all, for some people).

Best to backup from your site's CPanel>Files>Backups.

Do both the database and the "Home directory", from there.

If you ever need to restore, you can do that in the same place. :)

Thanks for the tip about backing up from cpanel
i shall do a fresh backup immediately.

Then do i just download the upgrade package and follow the instructions ?

Official version:

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading

In a nutshell:

Get upgrade archive (Package)
Dearchive.
Upload all files, overwriting what's there, now.
Make coffee. ;)
Point your browser to your normal URL, substituting "index.php" with "upgrade.php".
Follow on-screen instructions.
Drink coffee.
Done!
Delete upgrade.php.
Sigh in relief. ;)

Diamond Isle

What about Mods installed, will that cause a problem with the upgrade ?

In effect, they'll all be removed. None of them will work with V2, anyway. There may be upgraded versions, though.

You'd be best deleting them from the "Packages" directory, after the upgrade.

Diamond Isle

So no need to disable them, i can just go ahead with the upgrade
then delete them from the "Packages" directory, after the upgrade.
There are upgraded versions i have checked, so it would just be a simple matter of reinstalling them after the upgrade i presume.

On the cpanel Backup,
do i do a - Download or Generate a Full Web Site Backup
or -  Download a Home Directory Backup ?

Home Directory.

That's the actual site and the software on it.

Don't forget the database. :)
