Trying to optimize forum SMF 2.0.2

Hello all from Spain  .

I'll try to explain my problem with my bad English:

We had a forum SMF 1.6 from 3 years ago and everything was fine. A month ago I decided to upgrade to version 2.0.2 and everything seemed fine until it started coming out more and more frequent errors like the attached image.

I was informing me in this fabulous forum and in the internet in general and it seems to be an indeterminate error of the hosting server. I contacted them and they say that our traffic has increased a lot and, not being a dedicated server, that error continue appearing when we overcome resource constraints.
So far everything is logical. But my question to myself was that the situation could not have changed in a day. So my question to you is, can an SMF forum 2.0.2 requires more resources than a 1.6? You think that this can be because of some mod installed? In the latter case you could tell me which of the mods that I detail below consume too many resources to weigh the possibility to uninstall? With 9000 unique visitors daily believe it is necessary or convenient to hire a dedicated server?

Sorry for so many questions and I hope that together you can help me.

Yes, that's what I feared.
We contacted them and advised me a dedicated server but, you know, that opinion is very subjective as more money is always better for them  and I wanted a second  "neutral" opinion.

The Recent Topics/Post Block in Simpleportal is rumoured to eat resources if you have many items visible. Disabling that may help a little.

Don't think you need a dedicated server but think you need a decent VPS at least.

I agree totally with you. I also think that is not neccesary and I suspect it is not a good VPS. I don´t know if I can put this here (if there is any problem please remove it), could I ask you what is your opinion about 1&1 shared servers?

Yes Kindred, I did it. If I not remember bad were 12 ways to optimize your forum or something like that.

Find another hosting company who will automatically increase your quotas as and when you need them.

Allways remember in your selection.

The one with the lowest price is 'Never' the best host.

Hi Waris, I agree with you, always is better spend some money more to avoid headaches, I will keep on mind.


Anyway I followed the advice of Storman and removed 7 items 8 and I've had one day without seeing those pesky bugs. It soon, in a few days will give you more reliable results.

I think I'm in a position to make an acceptable assessment. Today with 15 trusted people aware of any errors as mentioned, only one has been reported as an isolated case. I'm sure the problem, in addition of a server easily congestionable obviously I know, is the block of Simple Portal Recent Post I have installed. And I'm convinced that if I remove the entire block instead of reducing by half the items would gain even more resources, the problem is that I see it very useful for us. I think an SMF forum may run perfectly on the server I have with the visits so far have, and as we say in Spain, hire a dedicated server would be "killing flies with a cannon"  .

I hope that works for any webmaster that, as I, do not have a server let say "racing".
