ever wondered why smf.org mails are going to spam folders?

your mailserver config seems to be broken...

my mailserver tells me:

Dec 27 01:41:28 static postfix/smtpd[19734]: warning: 66.71.247.155: hostname fw01.atl.forceitx.net verification failed: No address associated with hostname
Dec 27 01:41:28 static postfix/smtpd[19734]: connect from unknown[66.71.247.155]
Dec 27 01:41:28 static postfix/smtpd[19734]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[66.71.247.155]: 450 4.7.1 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [66=<XXXXXXXXmy.mailadress.hereXXXXXXXX> proto=ESMTP helo=<httpd1.simplemachines.org>
Dec 27 01:41:30 static postfix/smtpd[19734]: disconnect from unknown[66.71.247.155]

behind subdomain "httpd1.simplemachines.org" is no ip defined.. so the HELO is broken.. and a good configured mailserver should block your mails =)

Ah thats not the mailserver, its a temporary change in the mail features while the true maio server is under high stress and in the road of being ditched for a new one. httpd1 cannot really have a public resolvable IP as it doesnt have a public one of its own.

So yes, some mailservers, though mind you that most will actually let it pass if the rest of the msg has no spam probability, may unfortunately mark it as spam at the moment.
Rest assured that will be changed though. :)

well.. a good mailservers block the mail completly.. and this blocking happens BEFORE the content of the mail is analyzed..
so your mailserver sends mail.. gets answer about blocked mail... and no mail is delivered... but your server is still under stress.. so no win for anyone...

others with more libarate mailserver configs get the mails to the spam folder...

please fix this.. it makes no sense to still have the HELO missconfigured

One wonders whether it should actually be using EHLO rather than HELO...

That totally depends on it, demlak. I don't think you completely understood what I meant, but it's not too much relevant.
As I said; rest assured it will be changed; with which I meant it will be fixed rather soon.

@Arantor:
It doesn't matter too much actually for such emails. All it needs to do is deliver, for which HELO will suffice. It doesn't care much for features at the other side nor is it relevant to the receiving party if, and if so which, extra features other than delivering the email(s) are supported. To my regret, it even looks like some mail servers don't even understand EHLO, still :/

If all email from simplemachines.org is going to your junk folder even after you whitelist the domain, I'd suggest getting in touch with your mail provider and asking them to fix it from their end.

demlak

well.. for sure there are possibilitys to work around the mailserver missconfiguration of smf.org.. but it´s still a config thing on the smf server side.. not at our client side..

it´s so easy to fix.. just enter the correct/reachable host of the mailserver.. that´s all.. im sorry, but i don´t understand why this is not fixed since 4 month...

Would be good to double check your own settings.
They have been linked, if it's still über needlessly agressive it doesn't appear to be us lol.

Some providers are more aggressive than others in terms of what constitutes spam/abuse. In the past we've had ISPs blacklist us as soon as one or two users report our email as spam (which means that they don't remember signing up for our site).

demlak

mails are now delivered... thx a lot for fixing this..

would be nice to know how this is for other people now.. if the mails are still goind to spamfolders or so... =)

LiroyvH

I made the emails here route through the primary mailserver again, but it may be reversed again in the future when the situation calls for it.
If emails don't deliver when it does, you really ought to double check if your resolvers are working fine; PTR records are set everywhere...

Random question, in the settings table, is mail_strip_carriage set to on or not? (No, don't ask for a UI, there isn't one, just like there isn't a UI for mail_from)
