Shortened Links Request

I noticed that in the source code of the various pages of an SMF forum, it uses the full URL instead of the shortened version.  What I mean is, for example, if SMF is installed in a directory called "forum", wouldn't it only be necessary to use "image.jpg", instead of "hxxp:www.yourdomain.com/forum/image.jpg [nonactive]" in the code?  With the number of hits each page of the forum gets and the number of times the full URL is used throughout each page, I would imagine the shortened version of the URL could cut bandwidth significantly over time.
