How to add additional pages to the forum

Ok, I'm new to SMF but I have a decent amount of programming knowledge. I want to know how to create additional pages for the forum, add it onto the forum's main page, as well as use the login information in-order to keep cookies. I want to be able to add additional pages through the directory, and somehow keep the cookies and forum skin scheme.

For example, if I created a page in my directory called create_character.php. And on that page would be the character creation form that you fill out and boom, out comes a character, yada yada yada.

Thank you. the tutorial has seriously jump started my noggin and now i think i understand how to use the functions to my own needs.
