Wondering how I can set board/thread permissions so anyone can view this [nofollow] board, but only the topic starter and administrators can view their topic in this sub-board [nofollow]?

I know a lot of people, including myself in the past, have requested this; but I cannot for the life of me find it here on the SMF support forums. :(

Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a private topics mod somewhere for this purpose, however it's a performance hog under most circumstances (because it has to be applied everywhere)

There is also the option of implementing a helpdesk that would work just as well (without being the same performance hog)

Is this via. SimpleDesk? I tried it and didn't like the whole 'ticket' system. Is there a way to set it up exactly as I have described/given references to? I would like people to be able to visit http://nvguild.net/index.php?board=8.0 [nofollow] and create a thread right away, and have them/admins be the only people able to read it right off the bat (without any custom privs having to be applied).

Possible?

edit: found mod by Suki, link is broken. I have sent him/her a private message about it. Would still prefer the alternate option you have mentioned if it will operate as I need it to.

Arantor

Yes, that's SimpleDesk (I wrote it, by the way)

To make it like you described would require a mod that changes every single place where topics are used, of which there are many many places, which would be a major performance headache (making the entire site slower, even the mod author recommends not to use it on busy or large sites)

What do you mean everywhere? If it's a mod that applies this to the entire website, then it's not what I'm looking for.

No, that's not quite what I meant.

Even if you make it in a specific board, everywhere that considers that board has to take it into account. It'd suck, for example, if you made a board private but then search, unread, recent posts, RSS feeds, SSI integrations and other stuff then leaked those details.

Thus everywhere that considers topics has to take that into account - and it really hurts performance to do so.

SimpleDesk doesn't have any of those limitations (and thus not the performance hit) because it doesn't store the messages inside the topic area.

Can my goal be reached without the ticket system? Or could I add an "APPLY HERE" hyperlink to "x" thread (via [url]urlhere.com[/url]) and have it point to a pre-filled application form where fields are then entered according to the individual? Much like a forum registration, then when it's submitted, have it post to the board which is visible by "x" and "y" rank only? + further replies be visible and author/ticket submitter notified?

??

Arantor

-sigh- Sure your original goal can be reached. There is, as I said, already a mod for this - but the performance problems that are associated with it mean it's generally not a good idea.

The apply here setup is mostly doable using the Custom Form mod and that would make a new topic in a board, which you could limit - but you couldn't do it in a way where the topic starter would be able to see their own (as well as moderators seeing all of them) for *exactly* the same reason.

I'm not being funny but I've had to make this point several times now, your choices are a serious performance headache, or you use the helpdesk mod.
