garyeqm

Ive just installed the latest version of SMF and Mambo, but what do i need to install to bridge the two together?

Thank you

Gary

xenovanis

http://mamboforge.net/projects/mos-smf/

Use "MOS_SMF_BRIDGEv3.19a_SMF1.1b3.zip" if you are using SMF 1.1. Also, make sure to read the Combined Readme, as you need to make some changes if you are using Joomla.

garyeqm

Thanks a lot

Im using mambo so hopefully no changes will be needed!

Gary

garyeqm

As before I keep getting FAILURE and can't get past step 1 !

Is anyone free to help me? I spent all day yesterday trying to sort this with no luck.

Thank you

garyeqm

Installing this package will perform the following actions:
Type   Action   Description
1.   Execute Modification   ./Sources/Subs.php   Failure
2.   Execute Modification   ./index.php   Success
3.   Extract File   ./Sources/MOS_SMF.php

xenovanis

You are absolutely sure you have the right bridge for your version of SMF? Do you have any other modifications installed?
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

Ive installed modules and components in mambo yes, nothing out of the ordinary though.

Mambo version is 4.5.2

Gary

garyeqm

The forum seems ok - http://www.jugglenet.com/forum/

its just the bridge that wont work which is causing me major headaches! :P

It really would be great to get it working so I can actually make some progress with the site!

Cheers

Gary

xenovanis

I really think you are using the wrong bridgeversion, as you seem to use SMF 1.0.5 and not 1.1. Try to install this one:

http://mamboforge.net/frs/download.php/6472/MOS_SMF_BRIDGEv3.19a_stable.zip

And let me know it that works.
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

:D

Now on to step 2!  Thanks a LOT!

Gary

garyeqm

ok all installed and bridged, along with the accompanying modules.

However, on previewing my site, I get a problem - http://www.jugglenet.com/index.php

The issue is pretty obvious! All the modules should be down the left (to be arranged later), I'm not sure why theres a large forum box near the bottom, I didnt ask for that!

Any ideas?

Thank you

Gary

xenovanis

Try another template? Don't forget to add the code.
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

Why do I need another template?

I went through about 80 templates and decided on the one im using, ive even had logos desined to fit the theme, so i'm not prepared to change now.

It was all working fine until I installed SMF, which speaks volumes.

I'm not having a go mate but to get to this stage and then be told thatI need to change my template is like ripping my heart out!

It says there is a database error, not a template error.

Are you free to help 'off the forum'? These messages take AGES!

Thank you

Gary

garyeqm

Im sure that you could ascertain the problem within 2 minutes, i'll pay if required, I just REALLY need it sorted so I can make some progress with adding content etc.

Thanks

Gary

xenovanis

I am sorry, but you can't buy my time, nor can you decide where my priorities are. In the "ages" it takes for me to answer, you mway want to consider reading some documentation on this board instead of bumping. Sending PM's in this matter won't help at all. Please consider that we are all doing a volunteerly job here.

The reason I asked you to change you template is because your forum is misaligned, at least in Firefox, which could be the result of a template based on mainly css and no tables. Just like the SolarFlare template, that won't really work with a wrapped SMF.

As for the database error, can you check in your SMF errorlog to see if there are any messages?
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

'Buying your time' was a genuine offer.

Decide your priorities?

Ive read plenty of documentation and im sick of it, I have been working on this site for three weeks, had to restart 4 times and getting veery tired of it, considering its a free, non profit site.

Anyway, back to the topic.

This is my error log, all seem to be showing the same error......

Thanks a lot, believe me your help is truly appreciated!

Gary

xenovanis

Okay, did you by any change made any modifications to SSI.php? Did you maybe installed the Mambohacks bridge before you installed this one?

Try uploading a fresh copy of SSI.php (it's in the downloadpackage for 1.0.5) and see if that helps.
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

marlyred

You need to tweak either the css of your site template or the table widths in forum's default theme 'index.template.php.  The problem is not with the forum itself, you just need to make a few changes to make it fit in your site template.

garyeqm

I uploaded the file but no change.

Please let me know the changes I need to make as im truly stuck.

Thank you

Gary

xenovanis

What happens if you unpublish the module "SMF RecentTopics"?

Go to your Mambo backend -> Components -> SMF Forum and check if the path defined there is correct (it should be the same as the one you find in SMF Admin -> Edit Server Settings). Even if it looks correct, make sure to save it at least once.

Are you by any change using different databases?
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

Uninstalling that mod does nothing really.

The path is the same.

All are on the same database.

I cant REALLY go about uninstalling the modules, the WHOLE reason I chose SMF over simpleboards is for the modules that I wanted on the main page, so they need to stay!

Cheers

Gary

xenovanis

Okay, we're just testing some causes here, all right? Don't panic.  :) There is a problem with pure SSI modules publishing on the forumpage. What happens if you also unpublish this module?

mod_smf_topTopicsReplies

Basicly, you can publish these modules on any page, except the forumpage. There are also modules who use the entire SSI code, like the SMF online2 module, the recent events module and the login module, recent posts module..
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

So what? I now need to unpublish all the modules?

xenovanis

Apart from these:

SMF online2 module, recent events module and the login module, recent posts module

yes, at least on the forumpage. Also, how did you make the forum link in your menu?

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

Ive unpublished all the SMF modules and the page now displays ok, BUT i need these modules! However I ONLY need them on the front page (I will bring them into the main content area!)

Gary

Kindred

Here's the deal...   any module that calls an SSI function directly (from smf/SSI.php) will cause the forum to fail, if said module is visible while the forum is also visible.

Modules like Whosonline2, smf_login, events and recentPosts are re-stated in the module itself and are not calling SSI, which prevents the overlap-errors...

(however, it looks like you have some other errors, because when I click on forum at your site, it reloads the page about 10 times and eventually comes up blank in the content section)

It works ok for me - http://www.jugglenet.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=30

So let me get this straight, Im ok to publish the modules on the MAIN PAGE? that's ALL I want, I don't need them on any other pages!!!

Gary

xenovanis

Yes, you can publish them on the mainsite, that shouldn't cause any problems.
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

ok, would you mind just taking a quick look at my forum? Ive done nothing to it since installation, so it should be working properly!

garyeqm

Thanks a lot.

I'm now getting database errors in my Mambo admin panel though!

Honestly, adding SMF is like catching measles when you already have a cought and a cold!

Thanks a lot for your help guys, despite the apparent victory, I feel defeated!

Gary

xenovanis

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

I log in the admin panel and see

Fatal error: session_start(): Failed to initialize storage module: user (path: /tmp) in /home/jugglenet/domains/jugglenet.com/public_html/administrator/index2.php on line 34

If you want admin access let me know!

xenovanis

This is not a SMF problem, but a problem with Mambo or PHP. Try the solution as suggested here:

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

Thanks a lot.

I remember this happening before, for some reason i have to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

NEXT problem!

Whenever I publish any of the SMF modules on the main page only it throws the layout out of whack!

http://www.jugglenet.com/   -  see for example!

let me know if you want admin access so you can end my nightmare!!  :D

Gary

Kindred

yup...   the recent posts module uses a table to layout the contents...   you may have to 1) reduce the number of fields displayed in the recent posts module display and/or 2) modify the module to properly wrap within the severly limited sidebar that you have...

Why not so what I do...   Have the recentl posts module show in the "bottom" section...   in the main section of the page, below the "main" content.

garyeqm

Kindred,

Well thats what I intend to do. I was 90% of my modules to be displayed on the main page ONLY, in the main content area, forming a dynamic, constantly changing front page!

I have no idea to do it though, ive been told to search for 'mospositions'

Gary

garyeqm

Anyone know how to use 'mosposition' ????

Im searching and cant find any info on any forums!

Gary

Kindred

gary...

I don't know about your mambo template... but many of them have something like the following lines...

<?php mosLoadModules ( 'left' ); ?>
<?php mosLoadModules ( 'user1' ); ?>

or something like this:

    <!-- RIGHT Modules -->
    <?php
      if (mosCountModules('right')>0) {
        ?>

        <td width="180" valign="top">
          <?php mosLoadModules "right" ); ?>
        </td>
        <?php
      }
    ?>

what you want to do for the top or bottom modules is something like this...

find

      <?php mosMainBody(); ?>

and replace with:

          <?php mosLoadModules "top" ); ?>
      <?php mosMainBody(); ?>
          <?php mosLoadModules "bottom" ); ?>

that's the simple way...  you could also add IF statements to check if anything was in those module locations... but since there are no extra tables or cells, it really doesn't matter here...

xenovanis

If you publish a module, you can choose where it should be positioned. Have you tried some various positions, like top, bottom, user4, etc? The point is that each template tends to have his own postioning, so we can't tell yuo exactly what to do. It's a matter of trying..
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

So what would be the position of the main content area?  top?   inset?

If I publish several modules to the same position, will they all be put there?

Thanks

Gary

garyeqm

I did try before and it didnt work, but I just tried again and - http://www.jugglenet.com/

Need to sort the css of them obviously!

The modules all display fine apart from the SMF ones - have a look!

How can I sort this? The CMF modules are the most important ones for me!

Thanks a lot

Gary

xenovanis

Can you send me the templatefiles or give me a downloadlink? Right now I'm at work but I will take a look at them tonight.
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

garyeqm

Thanks a lot.

The theme is called Mbt Shopping and is halfway down this page - http://www.freemambo.com/website/content/view/67/2/ (There's a direct download link)

For some reason those particular modules are really screwed.

I have no problem if they span right accross the content area (in fact i'd prefer that!)

Gary

garyeqm

Would it be quicker if I paste the code for the page here?

garyeqm

I seem to have received the right instructions from the mamboserver forums to create the front page layout. - http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=61539

BUT I still have the problem with the way the SMF modules display.

I'll try having a module that spans the width of the content area as there's plenty of room for them in there!

Thanks for your time

Gary

Kindred

Gary...   do it that way you want but, as I responded over there... the way that he/she suggested is NOT the way to do it, IMO.

I uninstalled Simple Machines Forum and the accompanying modules as its a COMPLETE nightmare!

However now look at my site! The uninstalls were successful according to mambo (no problems at all)

Any ideas?

Gary

xenovanis

garyeqm,

I really recommend changing to another template as this one will keep giving trouble, with or without SMF installed. I tried it on a testsite with SMF, I tried it on a testsite without SMF and it keeps giving problems with modulespacing. It just won't work well.
