editing php files

I want to try and make some minor changes to the smf that is installed on my server, and to one or more of the mod's. Can I simply download a php file to my workstation, make a backup, edit the original file, and then upload it to my web server to replace the original? If the changes don't work out the way I was intending, can I return the msg board, or the mod, to how it was before I started changing things, by simply uploading my backup of the original to replace the file I edited?
