Hi there, I hope someone can help me. What I want to do is replace the "Show new replies to your posts" link with an icon. I would like to check first to see if new replies exist, and display one icon if they do and a different one if they don't. I have seached here and out on the web, but I can't figure this out - my php skills are pretty weak. I gather that what I need is probably in the recent.php file, but I don't know how to implement it.

So I'm running SMF 2.0.4 with a custom theme at http://www.theflipsideforum.com.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Firstly, no, this isn't in Recent.php

Secondly, this is an incredibly bad idea. Checking for unread replies to your posts is the third most computationally expensive thing in SMF (after searching and finding all unread items) and doing it pretty much every page just to show a different icon means creating a vast vast performance problem for no real benefit.

Also, please update to 2.0.5 and then to 2.0.6 (so you use the package manager, NOT doing a full upgrade), to take in the security fixes.

Dang, well that sucks. The performance is terrible enough, I get constant database connection errors.

Yeah... I've been wondering about that - if I upgrade, then all my customizations are gone. How do you "save" your customizations during an upgrade? Sorry, I know this is a newb question, but while I'm here...

Thanks for the speedy reply btw.

That's more your host than anything else. Find a better one.

This is why I *specifically* said not to use the large upgrade.

For years - pretty much since SMF started - you've been able to do minor upgrades in place, e.g. 2.0.4 to 2.0.5 and 2.0.5 to 2.0.6 without scratching all your files. Essentially you install mods that perform find/replace changes on the files just for the things that needed fixing.

Your admin panel should prompt you to download them, if not the admin panel the package manager *definitely* should.

Failing that, http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/ has the mod packages ready and available (and will also let you see what code physically changed between releases)

Yeah, it's one of the lesser known quirks of how we do things, but it usually works out OK in the end :)
