DHTML to replace frames Question

Howdy,

I have a theme design I'm mulling around in my head, but to perform it to its best, I need to implement some nice DHTML. What I'm thinking is someway to render the page as normal, but to have four <div> containers which form a "border" around the page.  These divs should be anchored on the page and not move at all.  A user would have a standard browser scrollbar to move the content, and the content page would be made with a bit of extra whitespace to cope with the "border".

In the dark and nasty past, you could do this with frames, but I'm simply not going to go down that path - if only because of the bookmark issue (ie: bookmarking the page does not bookmark the page, but the frame creating page).

Are there any decent examples around for me to review and learn this process?

Been googling around for a few days and haven't found what I'm looking for.

Needless to say, it needs to be a cross platform solution, and as backward compatible as possible - although I won't shy away from not supporting older browsers.  Have to cut the apronstrings some time ..
