first disable caching... second rename your cookie for smf... third clear the session table... drop the sessions with the red cross in phpmyadmin.... fourth... clear your browsers cache

try again after that, also look into your error logs SMF and Apache error logs could tell something ?!
Those steps in recommended order did not work either... :(  No errors in SMF logs either. Cannot look msyelf into apache logs so will inform for that with host.

More info:
had a look in access logs from host but there no erors shown related.

+

I did a brand new installation of SMF 2.0.6 on same host.
- new dbase,
- SMF 2.0.6 FULL INSTALL
- No plugins
- Only default theme
- Settings as recommended

then:
Downloaded 1 package specific for 2.0.6

Result:
And same problem, new login screen at trying to install or list files.

Giving up might be a an option.

Whats the name of the host you are on?

Considering your location I think its the same as mine :-)

That has so me something related to your host and the way it handles the sessions. May you both be using the same host, by any chance?

I can agree with that because my Host is PC extreme, and read something about it in the dutch forum:  http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=513380.20

but... now we know this host is giving us this problem, how to find the setting that should be changed/fixed?
I need to stay at pcextreme, besides that I have setup many cms systems and webshops there for my clients and have always had good support. If I know what to tackle I could get them to fix it.

Anybody got any idea?

It's difficult to say what could be causing this, but if you link us to a phpinfo file, we might be able to find something.

topic 6 in this thread had the phpinfo for pcextreme already, reposted above! thx for looking. would be great if we could get to the bottom of it. What I do now is install all packages locally and then migrate the site to the host, not ideal :-)

Sorry. I didn't see that and assumed it hadn't been posted yet. I've passed the link on to our server expert for further investigation.

However, it appears to me your host doesn't have a good understanding of PHP to begin with. The phpinfo you linked to shows a bunch of "disabled functions". The problem is that these functions are for an extension that has to be enabled when compiling PHP, so there's absolutely no need to disable its functions - if they don't want the functions used, they can just not compile PHP with that extension.

TMAS

ok interesting observation, I will pass this info on to them.
Altho I do think they know what they are doing as their support is outstanding and I am running about 50 cms installations for my clients, all the way up to latest wordpress 3.8, joomla, prestashop, magento, drupal etc etc All without any server config problems, all features and functionality run well.

Do you think the issue could be with the Varnish caching they use?
https://community.pcextreme.nl/wiki/Static-content-cache

Please google translate the page as its in dutch.

Thx,

A host who knows what they're doing doesn't disable functions from an optional PHP extension. A few seconds reading the PHP manual makes it obvious that the extension is optional and must be specifically enabled.

I highly doubt Varnish has anything to do with the problems you're experiencing.

On the other hand.... everything used to work fine up to SMF version 1.1.19.  Until I upgraded to SMF 2.0.6. .
So In my case I skipped all versions in between so dont know about 2.0 to 2.0.6. :(
But a fresh full 2.0.6. has the same issues.
So what changed in between there?

Thanks anyway Oldiesman. Hopefully the Server specialist has a clue.
Hopefully  we can switch on the neccessary functions in htaccess file as that happens a lot with that host :)  (disabling caching can be done there as well.)

TMAS

yes I just disabled it, takes 15
min before it kicks in as the .htaccess is also cached :-)
If this solves it, Ill post back

TMAS

disabling varnish caching doesnt solve it.

So just for the record, you put

Header Set Cache-Control "max-age=0, no-store"

in the root .htaccess, yes?

That should usually do the trick...
I don't think anything too useful can be said about it without looking at a few things close up. That, however, would require access to your account and forum.
