When you click the Home button or refresh from that button on my board, all of the News Fader items appear stacked on top of each other, then vanish.  It then starts displaying them one by one.

Is there a mod or some way this can be fixed.
Running 2.0.7
I am attaching an image I managed to capture of it...

That is a custom theme you are using. If you go to the Default Curve for the entire site, does the problem still exist? What are the installed mods?

pirc-bw

The theme is Core, I have only changed the colors.  But yes it does the same thing in the default theme.  I am attaching a screenie of my mods...

Did you place all the news items in the one box?

Beat me to it.  :)   None of the mods look to be very offending by nature.

TheListener

My news fader is used slightly different  :)

I use the marquee effect.  ::)

Nice work. I was looking at the bw-forums and thought maybe you had squared up the corners and reworked the body/header.

pirc-bw

Definitely not... There are six separate items in their own boxes in my news page.

And thank you to Lou69.  It was a lot of work to get the colors to match the rest of the pages that go hold tutorials to be used by the members.

Did you by chance make any changes in Boardindex.template.php?

Interesting. Did this problem occur before the CSS changes or after? You could save a copy of the current working .css file and then FTP an original back to the site and see if that clears the problem.

I played a bit with index.css, fader.js, boardindex.template.php and could not duplcate the issue. Of course I could have been looking in the wrong places and doing the wrong things.  :)

Have you ever used WinMerge to compare two files side by side?

http://winmerge.org/

It is a free utility you can use to help isolate the issue if you go to looking at other files.

pirc-bw

Up until about a week ago there were only two items in the fader.  It started when I added the last four.  Didn't add them all at once either.
I will try the FTP.

I created a user on the bw-forums. The news looks normal to me. One box with a two line, fading message.

pirc-bw

Click on the Home button and see what happens...

I did.  :)  The image I attached is from the Home page. I am using FireFox 27.

edit:  looks OK in IE 11 also. I probably would not copy anything over just yet.

pirc-bw

It happens very fast in every browser I have tried.  I don't have Firefox.  I just tried in Safari on my iPad and it was perfect, but on Chrome it still shows them all.

Interesting. Well, I think this would be more of a browser issue it seems. This fading uses a timing function for the fading and is driven by fader.js in the theme/default/scripts directory. You can adjust the speed of the fading in the settings for the theme. It is probably around 5000 now. You can increase it to 6000 and see if the slower fade works better with the internet connection and browsers.

Lou69

I have been sitting here watching the news fader and it is really working quite well. Fades properly and no news box jiggle.

pirc-bw

It was at 3000 and I increased it to 3500.  I will try a higher number.

Well I did before sending this.  Put it up to 6000 and that slowed it down.

That's because all the blurbs are two lines long.
But click the Home button or refresh and you will see what I mean.

5000 I believe is the default value for the Default Curve theme. 6000 can't hurt and will give your members a little bit longer to read the news message.

Hmm ... OK, I do see that ... but it is very quick. I have to hit Home sevearl times quickly. This may be a timing issue with the server connection/internet connection. Everytime you click Home, this brings you back to 'zero' so to speak. Perhaps the involved news items are being fast shuffled in the cache? Only a guess. You could try clearing the cache from Forum Maintenance.

I will set up a quick test on my test site. Be right back.

Lou69

Well ... I set up six news messages. Everything worked OK using the Core theme and the Yabb SE theme. That was on 2.0.6.

I can look at your index.css if you want.

You can also try clearing your browser cache as well as the site cache.

pirc-bw

I did that, but there was no change.
I just gave you permission to view the Admin area.
The theme we are using is BW Old Style Browns

Did you use the default index.css from the Core theme for the new theme?

PM me on your site, your user name so we can look at this.

pirc-bw

Yes, I only changed colors and the images used by the CSS.
I have PM'd you

The index.css for the BW Old Style Browns is the Default for Curve ... not the Core theme index.css.

Not necessarily.  :)   But, the index.css is missing 3 or 4 of the news Divs that are in the original default index.css.  Not sure if that is causing your issue though.

You can use WinMerge to find those, a stare and compare or I can do it for you. But not tonight.  :)  It is after midnight here.

pirc-bw

You can probably do it faster and better.  Tomorrow will be fine.  It's my bedtime too.

Try adding a background colour to your index.css file:

#smfFadeScroller
{
background-color: #000000;   <============
text-align: center;
padding: 0 2em;
overflow: auto;
margin: 1em 0;
color: #575757; /* shouldn't be shorthand style due to a JS bug in IE! */
}

A number of posts over the years have complained about misbehaving news faders, and on a couple of occasions this has fixed it. Costs nothing. Worth a try.

Hmm .. did not know that. Certainly that is not in the index.css that they are using. I made a few other minor corrections in their index.css but did not do what you have suggested. One for the memory banks.  :)

As I said - may do nothing to resolve the issue but it costs zilch to try it.

Lou69

Another possibility is that they have Global Headers installed from SMFHacks. So the news items appear in the header area and in the news bar at the same time.

When not logged in you see the news in the header. When logged in you see the news in the header and news bar. Could try uninstalling the Global Headers and see what happens.

The news in the header is static and remains that way unless you click on Home or refresh the page. The news bar is doing its fading in and out thing as it should.

I really believe this is an issue with the Global Header mod. I have installed SMF 206 and 207 on a test server and then installed the Global Headers mod. Using the code the OP provided I can reproduce this issue of the news items appearing twice. This is with the Default Curve theme and with the OP's custom theme.

The event is drive by the user clicking the Home button or the browser refresh button. Sometimes the additional news items will flash by quickly and sometimes will hang for a second or two. No idea if it is browser related but this does occur in FF 27 and IE 11.

Uninstalling Global Header and relying only on the news fader/news items and all works normal.

pirc-bw

It also occurs in Chrome and Safari.

Thanks for all your help, Lou69!
